SYMPTOMS
OF DIABETES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When a person is alert and active
physically and mentally, he is considered healthy. To be healthy,
you should be able to use properly the sugar and starches that
you eat. This requires the secretion of insulin from the pancreas
in the body. If the pancreas does not produce enough of the hormone
insulin, sugar accumulates in the blood and tissues. This causes
defects in various parts of the body. This condition is called
diabetes mellitus.
The common symptoms of Diabetes are as follows:
(i) Frequent and plentiful urination
(ii) Excessive thirst
(iii) Loss of weight despite increased appetite and food intake
(iv) Tiredness, weakness, drowsiness and irritability
(v) Itching of the vulva in women and the penis in man
(vi) Disturbances of vision, difficulty in focusing
(vii) Ulcer on the feet
(viii) Getting, boils and skin infections frequently
(ix) Pins and needles poking feeling and numbness of the hands
and feet
If the blood test reveals that a decilitre of blood has more than
200mg
of sugar, you know that you are a diabetic. Follow your doctor's
advice
carefully. Have a proper diet and treatment. With proper diet,
treatment and exercise, you can enjoy a normal life even with
diabetes.
