When we stand before the threshold of the new millennium, and the
new century of knowledge, it is the duty of humanity to interlink
tradition with science for leading a better life. Health Science
is one of such fast changing areas of human activities where a holistic
approach is absolutely necessary to promote a proper understanding
of tradition with modern research. Here such an experiment is carried
out by Dr. Hakeem S. Akbar Kausar, one of the leading Unani Physicians
of South India. His research experience and practical knowledge
in herbal medicines have made him a luminary with a different approach
in the field of medicine.
His research institute for Islamic Medicines has done a yeoman service
to the ailing sections of society and he has enjoyed much reputation
in the field of herbal research throughout Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
This publication of Kasini, with all details of the herb and its
scientific and medicinal potential highlights the significance of
its therapeutic value. It was a medicine prescribed by Prophet and
it was known as Hindba in Arabic showing its connection with Hindustan.
To the prophet it was a holy medicine as the leaf of Kasini herb
carried a drop of water which came down from heaven.
The Indian herbal science had already traced the plant's potential
for curing heart and kidney diseases. As such the Indian tradition
of this plant must have known to the Arabs who treated it as a holy
medicine. As Dr. Akbar Kausar with his indepth knowledge of Islamic
Medicine has propagated this plant as a health promoting herb and
also a panacea for many diseases. Research has further identified
it as a vegetable which can be taken as a sandwich also for daily
use.
It was a nice experience to visit his Kasini garden in which he
has extensively planted this herb for market. He strongly believes
that this divine plant is a vegetable for 21st century and that
will promote general health and act as a remedial medicine without
any side effect and safeguard against several diseases. His publication
will help to understand more about this herb and plant and also
the valuable humanitarian work in which Dr. Akbar Kausar has engaged
himself over quarter of a century. I am extremely happy to wish
every success and prosperity to his mission which has a popular
approach and commitment to the cause of common man. |
