OBESITY
AND DIABETES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been found that fat people have greater chances of getting
diabetes. If a person is over weight, he has an above average
chance of suffering from high blood pressure, heart disease and
arthritis. Their
average life expectancy is also lowered. Insulin secreted by the
pancreas is not enough for digesting all the starch that the fatty
people eat. So fat people should eat proper nutritive diet that
is high in fibre and low in carbohydrate and fat, exercise properly
and reduce their weight. Then only they can avoid getting diabetes
or if they are already diabetic, they can control their blood
sugar level.
IS
DIABETES CONTAGIOS?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of my women patients ask me this question: "My husbahd
has diabetes, Will I also get it?". Diabetes is not contagious
or infectious. It does not spread from person to person. It is
the problem
of an individual's pancreas.
The exact cause of diabetes is not known. To a certain extent
it is inherited. It comes in the family from parent to child or
grandchild. Some virus infections may also initiate diabetes.
For example, Germans measles, Shingles (Herpes) and mumps may
destroy pancreatic cells, if there is an Inherited fault. The
conjunction of these two factors, namely virus exposure and genetic
effect -may be the cause, of juvenile diabetes (diabetes in children
between the ages of 10 and 12). Most of these children have no
insulin produced by the pancreas and are dependent on insulin
injections.
Fatter people, however have greater chances of getting diabetes.
Diabetes cannot itself be prevented or anticipated except perhaps
by avoiding overweight. But diabetic complications can be controlled
by proper diet, treatment and exercise.
